Tauranga
Volvo enthusiast Adrian Rimmer, who purchased my old 1982 244GLT a few
years ago was looking for an old 244 to install a V8 engine. He bought
another 244 but decided that my old 244GLT, which was in excellent
condition was a better proposition for the V8 conversion. I visited
Adrian recently at his workshop (Adrian previously built the successful
Rimmer racing karts, but now is involved with building Blokarts) in
Tauranga to make some photos. Adrian has done a fantastic job by
building an ex Chevrolet Camaro 5.0 litre fuel injected V8 into his
244GLT, appropriately re-badged 284GLT.
Because he owns the engineering workshop he was able to do most of the
engineering work himself, he built special brackets in steel and
aluminium, exhaust, replaced all suspension parts, installed a new
aluminium radiator, etc. It is a real work of art, all done very
tastefully and it looks like a standard product. He even produced
special VOLV8 badges (registration plate) on the mag wheels and steering
wheel. I was most impressed and that was even before I went for a test
drive. Unfortunately I did not have a chance (yet) to drive it on the
open road, but even in a 50km/h area the power was .... Unreal.
Adrian sold this Volvo to Lance Styles of Tauranga in 2004
