Description |

|
The first owner bought the car in Ghana, North Africa on February 09, 1963. He returned to Scotland in May 1964 with the car. He eventually immigrated to New Zealand in October 1966 and the car was first registered in Dunedin on October 20, 1966.
He owned the car until June 1976 and covered a total of 93,125 miles. The next owner had the car for five years and sold it in 1981 with 108,000 on the clock. The next two owners didn't have the car for long. Owner number five purchased it in June 1983. The car failed a warrant of fitness on October 23, 1984 with the mileage at 118,587 and was put away indoors at that time to be fixed "at some stage". Many years later the car was purchased by an enthusiast with the intention of having a full restoration carried out. He had some initial work carried out to overhaul the brakes and the engine top end and sort out the column change linkage and front suspension. It was at this stage that I first saw the car. At the time I was looking for an Amazon to use as a second car. I tracked down the owner of this car through his page on Volvoadventures.com. He was happy to meet me and compare notes. We went for a drive and I was impressed with how stable and smooth this car was on the road. Everything was in pretty good order due to the relatively low mileage.
I corresponded with the owner of this car throughout 2005. He visited to see my two Amazon acquisitions (1959 122 and 1963 221) and I called in to the restoration shop to see his car a couple of times. Our last correspondence was in September, when he was looking forward to having the car back together by Christmas. I few months later I heard the sad news that he had died suddenly. The trustees of his estate were looking for a buyer for the car. The car was still in a dismantled state but all rust repairs had been carried out, the bodywork had been painted in epoxy primer and it had all the major panels trial fitted. All that remained was panelling, painting and re-assembly. I have purchased the car with the intention of completing the work myself.
