Install LED Day Running Lights (DRLs) in Fog lights 2009 Volvo V50

  Disclaimer:   Don't try this if you are not knowledgeable with electric circuits or not a qualified auto electrician.

This only applies to cars that have no DRL switched on by Factory, they can be switched On or Off by software update at Volvo Dealers.

My aim was to use automatically switched On and Off Day Running Lights in the Fog Lights without costing so much such as the aftermarket Volvo supplied package. After studying the schematics I finally came up with the following system which works well for me;

Start engine > DRLs ON
(no other lights are on, front or back)
Stop engine > DRLs OFF after a short delay, when engine management shuts down
Parking lights On > DRLs OFF
Headlights ON > DRLs OFF

The LED DRLs I use are not suitable as Fog lights, the fog light switch will be redundant.

Materials required apart from Patience, common sense, time:
New Change Over Relay. Tyco type V230774A1001A403 12VDC (approx. US$10)
Multi LED lights, available on Ebay.com
Wiring, terminals, schematics below.
No programming necessary at the Dealers workshop

Lights OFF > DRLs ON Lights ON > DRLs OFF Wiring

Remove Fog light cover Replace bulbs Multi LED DRL lights

As you can see most of the wiring is done in the engine bay's fuse box;
Schematic 1: Remove fuse F29 is now redundant. Pull out relay R4 is now redundant.
Use the new Tyco relay (R4) and wire it as shown in red in both schematics 1 and 2.

Description:
Power for the LED DRLs (very low current) is coming from the engine management fuse F33 (Do not use the existing fog light bulbs because of the much higher current rating)

R4 contact 4 will be connected to the old R4 relay base terminal 5 which is wired to both fog lights. Please use the appropriate terminals on the wiring

R4 contact (3 and 4) is a normally closed contact (NC) so as soon as engine management is switched on > power to LEDs.

As soon as parking lights are switched ON and therefore also with the headlights on, relay R4 will be energised and the contact of R4 opens and DRL LEDs switch OFF.

The relay R4 coil (terminal 1=pos) is connected directly into the front fog light wire, terminal 7 on the plug, make sure you have the right wire in the bundle.

The relay R4 coil (terminal 2=neg) is connected to any chassis terminal nearby.

Comments: If you want to keep the fog lights and install new aftermarket LEDs the installation is more straightforward;

Description:
You still need the new Tyco relay or similar with a normally closed (NC) or change over (CO) contact I have called it R40 in the Schematic:

Do not touch anything in the Fog light circuits: leave fuse F29 and relay R4 inplace.

Power for the LED DRLs (very low current) is coming from the engine management fuse F33

R40 contact 4 will be connected to the + of both new LEDs. Please use the appropriate terminals on the wiring. Neg LEDs will be connected to chassis.

R40 contact (3 and 4) is a normally closed contact (NC) so as soon as engine management is switched on > power to LEDs.

As soon as parking lights are switched ON and therefore also with the headlights on, relay R40 will be energised and the contact of R40 opens and DRL LEDs switch OFF.

The relay R4 coil (terminal 1=pos) is connected directly into the front fog light wire, terminal 7 on the plug, make sure you have the right wire in the bundle.

The relay R4 coil (terminal 2=neg) is connected to any chassis terminal nearby.

The best way to wire it all is to run all LED wiring individually to the fuse box in the engine bay and make all connection there. The schematic is not a wiring diagram, just a schematic, wiring will be very easy but check polarity well before testing. Happy wiring
