Slow
starter from Göthenburg brought up to speed
Admitted, Volvo arrived relatively late to the market with a SUV.
However, definitely not too late: by now, the seven-seater reached such
a degree of popularity that German customers have to prepare for a one
year wait. While international awards are pouring in, Göthenburg plans to
increase yearly production to 80.000 cars to keep up with the demand.
Good news for those who ordered in time and wisely decide for the diesel
model. This version is quite economic with the valuable juice: 9,1 litres
to 100 km according to factory specifications, almost 4 litres less than the big petrol counterpart.
The diesel is a cherrypick. The aluminium 5 cylinder produces 120 kW/163
BHP.
The
engine, manufactured in the Skövde plant, is equipped with an
intercooler and “common rail” technology .
The diesel engine however, is just about enough for the 2.3 tons cross
country version. On the other hand, there is enough hidden power in the
engine that can be brought to life by an experienced tuner.
First stop for Volvo power is the Lübeck based tuning workshop MR
Sweden Motorsport. As expected, the team around Markus Reumann could
hardly wait to see the first XC90 roll on their operating tables.
By adding the already proven Tuning-box and a sports air filter, they
managed to increase the power to 140 kW/190 BHP. More important though
is the increase in torque from 340 Nm to 385 Nm.
A trip on the country road proves that the visit to Lübeck was the
right thing to do. Taking over is remarkably smoother and faster while
on the motorway, the big Volvo finally feels at home in the fast lane.
This is mostly due to the fact that the XC90 can now travel beyond 200
km/h. This is the status that the customers expect from a Volvo.
Who, like most Volvo drivers, likes it discrete should leave it at the
tuningbox. For those who want more, there is a wide choice in the Lübeck
shop. First addition for example could be the high grade steel sports
exhaust system with a 100 mm opening. MR grants 6 years warranty on
this.
Off course the petrol versions can be tuned as well.
The huge selection of wheels reaches from a humble 7x17 inches for 168
€ to an impressive 8.5x20 that will set you back 699 €. The testcar
used wheels 8,5 x 20 inches with tyres Pirelli Scorpion 265/40/20.
Important: Even these wheels can be fitted without any bodyworks!
Other options include high grade steel sidestrips and bull catcher.
Traditionally, the interior of Volvo does not leave much room for
improvements. At the moment, MR Sweden limits the offerings to a 23
piece wood or carbon decoration set.
